Sahme, Jean – 10″ Tall Wedding Vase with Bird Wing Migrations (1990s)

6"w x 10"h

$ 1,500.00

Jean Sahme is a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. This tall wedding vase is coil-built, stone polished and painted with bee-weed, a deep red clay.  The body of the wedding vase has interlocking blackbird wing designs.  What makes this piece unusual is that the white lines in the black painted areas are all incised into the clay!  It is not often that we see this in Hopi-Tewa pottery.  The result is striking.  The wedding vase was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface.  It is striking in design, size, and coloration.  It is signed on the bottom “Jean Sahme Nampeyo”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
