Jean Sahme is a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. This large jar is coil built, thin-walled, and painted with bee-weed and red clay slips. The jar has a wide shoulder and sloping neck. The jar is painted with large corn plants next to Katsinas and swirling Sikyatki birds. The design is varied across the entire surface of the piece! It is tightly painted and highlighted with red and orange clay slips. The jar was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Sak-Honsee” along with her signature fish and corn plant for Corn Clan. This large jar is certainly Jean at her very best in terms of both size and complexity of the design. The jar has a Third place ribbon from the 2004 Santa Fe Indian Market.
