Sahme, Jean – Jar with Pottery Shard Designs (1980s)

6"w x 6"h

$ 900.00

Jean Sahme was a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. This jar has a round body and a short neck.  The jar is fully painted with a series of pottery shard designs.  Each section is different in design.  The piece is painted with bee-weed (black) and highlighted with polished red areas.  The jar was traditionally fired so there are blushes on the surface.  The piece is thin-walled and elegant in form and design.  It is signed “Jean” and two ears of corn.  One for Corn Clan and one for “Sahme”, which mean corn.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
