This is a very large gunmetal fired plate by Russell Sanchez. He continues to be one of the true innovators and revivalists in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is perfectly coil built, stone polished, and etched. This plate has a micaceous rim and a fully polished center. The plate is etched with avanyu that encircles the piece and is fully polished. Note the rain clouds and his signature bear paw hear the head of the avanyu. The plate was traditionally fired (see last photos) to a silvery-gunmetal shine. What does gunmetal firing mean? Its when a piece of pottery is fired very high and instead of just turning black, it turns a silvery, metallic coloration. Russell is one of the only potters working today who can achieve this coloration through firing as it is risky that the intense heat will crack the pottery. This plate appears both black or gunmetal, depending on the lighting. After the firing tiny coral pieces were inset into the plate, along with two pieces of turquoise. The rim has three bands of hematite hei-shi beads. In total there are 607 inset pieces of coral, turquoise, and hematite. Simply amazing! The plate is signed on the back “Russell”. It has a museum mount made to hold it.

This is a large black-and-sienna plate by Russell Sanchez. He continues to be one of the true innovators and revivalists in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is perfectly coil built, stone polished, and etched. This plate has a polished rim and center. The rim it two-toned sienna. The center is fully polished and the surrounding area is slipped with mica. The front has a polychrome center with a very traditional design. There is a checkerboard corn pattern in the center. Extending out are seed and plant designs. The designs are etched into the clay before firing. There are three inset bands of turquoise hei-shi beads on the edge and on row of shell and turquoise hei-shi beads around the center design. The plate is signed on the back “Russell”.
