Sanchez, Russell – 9″ Tall Black and Sienna Water Jar with Mimbres Deer, Ribbon (2004)
$ 14,000.00
This is a classic long neck water jar by Russell Sanchez. The jar is coil-built, stone polished, and the designs are etched and carved into the clay before firing. The jar has a round body and an elongated neck. The rim of the jar has a fluted edge that undulates. It is fully polished, as is the inside of the neck. The body of the jar has alternating sections of carved feathers and incised Mimbres-style deer. Each of the three Mimbres deer are depicted in different motion. They are separated by deeply carved feathers that are slipped with mica. All the design work on this piece has to be done before it was fired. After the firing, it was two-toned sienna on the panels with the deer. There are also five rows of inset shell and turquoise hei-shi beads. The jar is signed on the base in the clay with his kayak hallmark from the early 2000s. This jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It has a blue ribbon from the 2004 Santa Fe Indian Market.
