Sanchez, Russell – Black-and-Green Gourd Bowl with Bear Lid
$ 4,400.00
Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired. This is a gourd bowl, with oval indentions around the side. There are eight indentions around the piece, and the bowl is fully polished. The “gourd” indentions are a reference to the gourd shards used to smooth down the inside of the pottery when it is being made. The bowl was traditionally fired a glassy black (see last photos) and, after the firing, it was two-toned green on the rim. The bowl has a bear lid that is fully polished and it is incised with bear paws. The bear also has a heartline. There are 42 inset pieces of hematite around the rim of the bowl, along with a band of hei-shi beads. The bear lid has 20 hematite stones, along with two turquoise for the eyes and one in each bear paw. There are a total of 66 inset stones on this piece. All the stones are inset after firing. The bowl is elegant in shape and design with a modern strength. It is signed, “Russell ’25”.
