Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired. This large water jar is a classic shape with a round body and an elongated neck. The entire piece is fully polished. The body of the jar is etched with old-style traditional San Ildefonso cloud designs. The neck of the jar is two-toned green with etched bear paws. There are inset hematite and turquoise stones. The neck of the jar has three inset rows of turquoise hei-shi beads. Near the base are two rows of hematite hei-shi beads. At the bottom of the jar, Russell has 16 indented gourd designs. They are all fully polished and are a perfect addition to the overall jar. The jar has a carved lid with a diamond shaped opening and the top is two-toned sienna. The entire piece and lid have 205 inset stones! The silvery gunmetal coloration of the jar from the firing adds to the dramatic appearance of the piece. All the stones are inset after firing. The jar is elegant in shape and design with a modern strength. It is signed, “Russell ’25”.
