Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  This seedpot is round in shape and fully polished.  The top is etched with an avanyu.  Note the tiny bear paw behind the horn of the avanyu, which a hallmark of Russell’s pottery designs.  The piece was fired a deep black coloration and then the top was two-toned green.  After the firing a single piece of turquoise was added for the eye of the avanyu and there are inset hematite stones below the shoulder.  There are two inset rows of titanium hei-shi beads.    There are a total of 39 inset stones on this piece.  All the stones are inset after firing.  It is signed, “Russell ’25”.

Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  This jar has a sharp shoulder and sloping neck.  The jar was fired a glassy black and then the rim was two-toned green.  The neck has an etched bear paw and there are two bands of hei-shi beads.  The body of the jar has an etched bear and then etched clouds and birds on the opposite. There are inset coral stones on the neck and a single inset piece of turquoise in the bear paw.  The birds and clouds have coral and the bear has a large inset piece of turquoise and a tiny diamond for the eye.  The jar is a striking combination of colors, designs and detail.  There are a total of 39 inset stones on this piece.  All the stones are inset after firing.  The jar is elegant in shape and design with a modern strength.  It is signed, “Russell ’25”.

Russell Sanchez (b. 1963) continues to be one of the master innovators in Pueblo pottery.  He creates each piece perfectly hand-coiled, stone polished, then etched, inlaid, designed, and fired with traditional Native American pottery methods.  Russell learned to make pottery from his great-aunt, noted potter and pottery matriarch Rose Gonzales (1900-1989.) He started making pottery at the early age of 12 years old on the San Ildefonso Pueblo. Russell has received numerous awards and recognition for his pottery throughout his career, including such distinctions as 'Best of Division' at both the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Indian Market.  In 2007, Native Peoples Magazine presented Russell's art in the feature article of the Fall issue.  In 2011, Russell was awarded the exclusive 'Tony Da Award' for Pottery in Santa Fe. Russell recently received the 'New Mexico Governor's Award for Excellence in Art 2017.  In 2019, he won "Best of Pottery" at Santa Fe Indian Market.  At the same time, he was involved in a major exhibition of historic San Ildefonso pottery at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, NM.  In 2022, he won Best of Pottery and Best of Show at the Santa Fe Indian Market.  His work remains on a continued path of excellence and creativity.
