Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired. This seedpot is round in shape and fully polished. The top is etched with an avanyu. Note the tiny bear paw behind the horn of the avanyu, which a hallmark of Russell’s pottery designs. The piece was fired a deep black coloration and then the top was two-toned green. After the firing a single piece of turquoise was added for the eye of the avanyu and there are inset hematite stones below the shoulder. There are two inset rows of titanium hei-shi beads. There are a total of 39 inset stones on this piece. All the stones are inset after firing. It is signed, “Russell ’25”.
