4"w x 6.5"h (w/ lid)

$ 8,800.00

Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  The shape of this jar was inspired by the work of Russell’s great-aunt, Rose Gonzales.  The cylindrical shape of this jar is inspired by historic San Ildefonso boxes. The piece is round and fully polished.  It is etched checkerboard rows representing corn.  They alternate between micaceous and matte.  Each row has inset turquoise in each matte square.  Each row is separated by a row of hematite hei-shi beads.  The lid is a bear that is also fully polished.  The bear is two-toned sienna and inset with larger turquoise stones.  The top of the lid is micaceous clay slip.  There are a total or 124 inset stones on the jar and lid.  The cannister has a near-gunmetal glassy appearance from the firing.  The jar and bear are both signed, “Russell ’26”.
