Stunning!  This jar  by Russell Sanchez has a creative combination of design, form, and color.  The jar has a low shoulder and an elongated neck.  The neck is carved with 24 overlapping sharp melon ribs that are slipped with mica. The base has an additional 24 swirling ribs slipped with mica. The body of the jar is polished and etched with an avanyu as the design.  The piece has a lid with a sculpted fish!  The base of the is polished while the fish is slipped with mica.    The jar and lid were traditionally fired to a glassy, nearly gunmetal coloration.  After the firing, there are 110 inset coral and turquoise stones were inset into the piece.  There is a piece of Kingman turquoise for the eye of the avanyu and a tiny piece of turquoise in the bear paw above the avanyu.  There are three inset bands of hematite hei-shi beads. On this jar, Russell said the blue (turquoise) is the water while the red (coral) is the fish spawning.  A creative and visually stunning jar!  The jar and the lid are both signed on the bottom in the clay.  A wonderful traditional and yet very modern piece!
