This is a classic gunmetal lidded bowl by Russell Sanchez. He continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired. This piece was fired to a gunmetal coloration. What does gunmetal firing mean? Its when a piece of pottery is fired very high and instead of just turning black, it turns a silvery, metallic coloration. Russell is one of the only potters working today who can achieve this coloration through firing as it is risky that the intense heat will crack the pottery. The bowl is a classic shape with a round shoulder. The bowl and lid were fired to a silvery, gunmetal coloration. After the firing, Russell added turquoise stones to the rim of the bowl. The bear lid has etched bear paws on each side of the lid and in set stones on the heartline bear. There are a total of 91 inset turquoise stones on this piece. The bear lid is a very metallic coloration from the firing. Both are a nearly perfect silvery gunmetal coloration. I’m not sure the photos even do it justice, The jar and bear are both signed, “Russell ’26”. The jar has a blue ribbon and “Best of Pueblo Undecorated” from the 2026 Gallup Ceremonials
