This is a classic polychrome bowl by Russell Sanchez.   He continues to be one of the true innovators and revivalists in Pueblo pottery.  Each piece is perfectly coil-built, stone-polished, and etched.  This bowl is polished white and the top half has two avanyu etched into the clay.  Around the body of the piece are two rows of checkerboard designs, polished red and matte.  The base has small bear paws etched into the clay along with mountain designs.  The bowl is inset with various sizes of coral and three rows of shell hei-shi beads.  The bowl also has a polished red heartline bear lid.  The base of the lid is also polished red and incised with two bear paws.  There are tiny coral inset for the bear’s eyes and in the bear paws. Overall, there are 194 inset pieces of coral on the lid and the bowl!  Both the lid and the bowl were traditionally fired and the stones inset after the firing.  The coloration of the white clay with the deep red polished surfaces and coral are striking!  His deep red clay is another recent addition to his clay art, starting around 2005.  As Russell continues to innovate from historic designs, he says, “Tradition means moving forward and adding to it. You keep moving forward.  If we stayed stagnant we would no longer exist.”  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Russell”.  It is exciting to see how this imagery is not new but Russell’s reinterpretation of it both modernizes and revives.
