Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired. This large water jar is a classic shape with a round body and an elongated neck. The jar has carved bands around the neck. The body of the jar is fully polished and etched with avanyu. One has a turquoise eye for Summer and the other a coral eye for winter. Behind each is a small bear paw with an single inset piece of turquoise or coral. Below the avanyu is a band of checkerboard designs and near the base are mountains. The lid of the jar has sixteen rounded sections emanating out from the larger fully polished flame. The jar and lid were fired black and the stone were added after the firing. The piece has a creative balance of traditional in form and design with an elegant shape with modern strength. It is signed, “Russell ’26”.

This large water jar is a classic shape with a round body and an elongated neck. The neck of the jar has four rows of inset hematite hei-shi beads. One side of the jar is carved and has cougar in a cameo style. The cougar is surrounded by a band of hematite beads. The opposite side is fully polished and etched with a heartline bear. Below the bear are etched classic cloud and checkerboard designs. The jar has an inset diamond for the eye of the bear along with a piece of turquoise. The cougar also has a diamond eye and a large turquoise inset. There are also small inset hematite stones. The jar and lid have a total of 135 inset stones. The jar has a sculpted and polished flame as the form. There are hematite stones inset on the edge of the lid. The piece has an interesting balance of traditional in form and design and modern with the inset titanium and the lid. The silvery gunmetal coloration of the jar from the firing adds to the dramatic appearance of the piece. All the stones are inset after firing. The jar is elegant in shape and design with a modern strength. It is signed, “Russell ’25”.
