Setalla, Stetson – Tall Jar with Moon and Mesa Designs
Original price was: $ 350.00.$ 260.00Current price is: $ 260.00.
Stetson Setalla is a son of noted potter Pauline Setalla and the brother of Dee Setalla and Gwen Setalla. This jar has tall sides and it is very tightly painted with bee-weed (black) and dark red clay slip. The jar has panels of designs. There are stylized butterflies alternating with mesa and moon designs. The jar is traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. It is signed on the bottom “S. Setalla” and rain cloud. Interestingly, the first time I met Stetson was through the famous photographer Jerry Jacka, around 1998. Jerry was photographing Stetson’s pottery for his book on Hopi art and asked Stetson to stay until I arrived so I could see his pottery! Definitely a talented potter from the very beginning.
