Shutiva, Stella – Bowl with Birds and Star (1970s)

8.5"w x 5.75"h

$ 875.00

Stella Shutiva was renowned for her corrugated pottery.  Her style was inspired by pre-historic style corrugated vessels and a continuation of the pottery by her mother, Jessie Garcia.  This is one of her earlier painted pieces. The bowl is thin-walled and coil-built. The top is painted with four birds and a star design.  Each bird is highlighted with an orangish-red clay slip.  The black is bee-weed.  The bowl was traditionally fired that created color variations on the surface.  The piece is signed, “S. Shutiva”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Definitely a classic of her clay art!
