Lorenzo Spencer is one of the few Navajo male potters. He is married to Sue Williams and he learned to make pottery from his mother-in-law, Rose Williams. This bowl is coil-built and stone polished. The top part of the bowl is tan (the natural color of the clay) and the bottom half is red. The tan area has mountain and cloud designs. The mountains extend downward to a rug design tightly etched into the clay. The was traditionally fired to create blushes on the surface. After it was fired, it was covered in pinon pitch in the manner of historic Navajo pottery. The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Lorenzo Spencer”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
