Suazo, Marie – Red Bowl with Carved Avanyu
$ 150.00
Marie Suazo is a granddaughter of noted potter Rosita Velarde and a daughter of Teresa Gutierrez. She is a sister of potters Carol Velarde and Doris Tenorio. She is known for her deeply carved pottery and use of complex designs. This bowl is one of her few red pieces. It is highly polished and it is very deeply carved. The design is an avanyu that encircles the bowl. The recessed area from the carving has a cream-colored clay slip which she also uses to outline the carved designs. The result is that the design detail is accentuated. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Marie Suazo”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
