Tafoya, Doug (Cain) – Red Bowl with Carved Bear and Bear Paws (1980s)

Doug Tafoya (Cain) (1942-2026) is a son of noted potter Mary Cain and grandson of Christina Naranjo.  He is a brother of Tina Diaz, Linda Cain, Joy Cain, and Billy Cain.  This bowl is coil-built and carved with a bear on one side and a bear paw on the opposite side.  The piece is fully polished.  Note the background area is slipped with the traditional white clay.  The bowl was traditionally fired to a glassy red coloration.  The jar is signed, “Doug Tafoya”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Sadly, Doug passed away in September, 2026, but his work remains a striking reflection of the Cain family style.
