This is a classic bowl Juan Tafoya. It is from 1980. The bowl is coil-built and it is fully polished. It was etched with an avanyu (water serpent) in a medallion on one side. It was fired a deep black coloration. There is a single inset piece of coral in the center of the medallion. The bowl is signed in the clay on the bottom, “Juan Tafoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, This is a classic wide shoulder jar by Juan Tafoya. The jar is from 1981. It is fully polished, and it has a deep black coloration. The rim is two-toned sienna. There is an etched avanyu encircling the piece. The band below the avanyu slipped with a red clay. There is a single inset piece of turquoise for the eye of the avanyu. The jar is signed in the clay on the bottom, “Juan Tafoya”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair., or repair.

Juan Tafoya was a son of Donicia Martinez Tafoya (San Ildefonso) who taught him to make pottery. He was a grandson of Teresa Martinez. He was a brother of Elizabeth Lovato and Annette Romero. Juan was known for his incised and painted pottery. He won awards at Santa Fe Indian Market, Eight Northern Indian Market and other events.
