Mida Tafoya is a daughter of Christina Naranjo and a sister of Teresita Naranjo and Mary Cain. She is known for her traditional style of Santa Clara carved pottery. This bowl is carved with a water serpent (avanyu) encircling the piece. The design is very deeply carved into the clay. The entire piece is fully polished. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Mida Tafoya”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Mida Tafoya was a daughter of Christina Naranjo and a granddaughter of Sarafina Tafoya. Her sisters were Mary Cain, Mary Louise Eckleberry, and Teresita Naranjo. She learned to make pottery from her mother. Mida was the mother of Ethel Vigil. She began making pottery in 1945 and was known for her traditional designs and classic style of carving.
