This seedpot by Ray Tafoya is taller in shape.  It is fully polished and fired a deep black coloration. The piece is etched with a cardinal, flowers, and prayer feathers.  It’s not often we see such realistic depictions in his designs.  The piece is highlighted with additional red and blue clay slips.  The seedpot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom with his White Mountain hallmark.

Tafoya, Ray (1956-1994)

Ray Tafoya was an innovator in incised pottery with his use of Mimbres designs and larger plain surfaces with highlighted designs. He was a brother of Paul Speckled Rock and Kenneth Tafoya. He was a grandson of Severa Tafoya, the husband of Emily Tafoya and the father of Jennifer Tafoya. He was known for his incised miniature pottery with designs highlighted by additional clay slips.
