Doris Tenorio is the granddaughter of Rosita Velarde, a daughter of Teresa Gutierrez, and a sister of Carol Velarde and Maria Suazo. She is known for her deeply carved pottery and use of complex designs. This plate (or wall-plaque) is deeply carved. There is an avanyu in the center. Around the edge are rain, cloud, and mesa designs. It is deeply carved and tightly designed. It is fully polished and the designs are outlined in clay before the piece was fired. It was fired a deep black coloration. It is signed on the bottom, “Doris Tenorio”. There is a second place ribbon from the 1991 Santa Fe Indian Market. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
