Torivio, Dorothy – 9.5″ Wide Long Neck Jar with Interlocking Butterflies (1995)
$ 6,500.00
WOW! This is a spectacular large jar by Dorothy Torivio. The piece is coil-built and painted with bee-weed. It has her iconic shape with a wide shoulder and elongated neck. Did you know that Dorothy created this shape as a form that accentuated her op-art designs? The piece is painted with bee-weed (black) and has interlocking butterflies. Note how they start small at the base, get large at the shoulder, and then smaller again at the rim. It is this dynamic flow of design, matching shape with op-art imagery, that continues to make her work visually recognizable and important in the history of Acoma pottery. The open space of the white and the contrasting black give the jar a very modern appearance. The piece is signed on the bottom, “Dorothy Torivio” and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It was made around 1995.
