Torivio, Dorothy – Plate with Mimbres Lizards (1970s)
$ 200.00
This is an early piece by Dorothy Torivio. She was among the first to utilize and then refine the “op-art” style in her Acoma pottery. She took classic Acoma patterns and then repeated them on a vessel, ranging in size from small to large and then small again, in accordance with the shape of the vessel. This is one of her few plates. It is made with red clay and then painted with bee-weed. There are two Mimbres Lizards and flowers. It is a very traditional design for her work. The plate is signed on the bottom, “D. Torivio,” and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
