Unsigned – San Ildefonso Polychrome Water Jar with Clouds and Mountains (1915-20)

This is a charming small water jar from San Ildefonso Pueblo.  It is from around 191-20. The piece is made from native clay, slipped white and painted.  The inside of the neck has a cloud design, which is then repeated again on the top of the shoulder. The bottom of the jar has a mountain design.  It is a striking design for the size of the jar. The design work goes to nearly the bottom of the jar, which indicates the dating of 1915-1920.  The jar was traditionally fired, giving it the coloration on the surface.  It is unsiged and there are just not enough indicators to create a strong attribution.  However, it is in very good condition with no chips,  cracks, restoration or repair.
