Velarde, Carol – Jar with Carved Avanyu and Cloud Designs

Carol Velarde is known for her deeply carved pottery. This is a large piece of her pottery.  It has a wide shoulder and a short neck.  The shoulder of the jar has a deeply carved avanyu and there are lightning designs extending from the neck.  Note how deeply she carves into the clay relative to the size of the bowl!  After it is carved and polished she then uses clay to outline the design.  Visually, this makes the imagery more dramatic.  The bowl is signed on the bottom, “Carol Velarde”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
