Dolorita Vigil (1883–1918), was a niece of Florentino and Martina Montoya and learned to make pottery from them.  She was not a prolific potter but followed in their distinctive style of fully designed pottery. Her career as a dressmaker seems to have influenced her painted designs, which often appear to have the quality of “embroidery” in the placement and flow of designs and the painted inner rims of her vessels.  This water jar is painted with flowing designs that make us think of her embroidery designs.  The inner lip is also painted. The jar is slipped with Cochiti white clay, which one would expect as it was introduced by Florentino and Martina.  The jar is painted to the base.  Sadly, Dolorita passed during the 1918 Influenza epidemic.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It was published in the book, “Maria and Modernism” and featured in the exhibition at the Heard Museum.
