Youngblood-Lugo, Sergio – “The Guardian” Red Plate

6.25" diameter

$ 1,100.00

Sergio Lugo is the middle son of noted potter Nancy Youngblood and a brother to Joseph Lugo and Christopher Youngblood.  He learned to make pottery from his mother.  Each piece is coil-built, carved or painted, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This plate is entitled, “The Guardian”.  It is carved with a flame design that is polished red.  In the center is an incised eye with a polished red pupil surrounded by micaceous clay slip.  Sergio said of his eye design:

“In many cultures, the eye represents spiritual awakening and enlightenment.  For me, this is my rendition of the theme.  It is a symbol of protection, of being watched over.  On this plate, it is a guardian, the eye surrounded by flame.”

The red areas are highly polished and the plate was traditionally fired.   It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sergio Lugo”.
