Youngblood, Nancy – 16 Slant Rib Melon Bowl
$ 4,800.00
This is a classic slant ribbed melon bowl by Nancy Youngblood. The bowl is coil-built, and each rib is deeply carved into the clay. The depth of the carving and the symmetry of each rib is exceptional. This is certainly one of the enduring aspects of her incredible artistry. Each rib is then polished with a stone to achieve the shine. Nancy has a particular stone that allows her to polish it so deeply, and the result is that the piece has a glassy surface. Note, when looking down at the top of the piece, that each rip has a sharp edge! This is difficult to maintain when sanding and polishing, but the result is elegant and perfectly reflects the light against the angles. The ribs swirl around the piece. It was traditionally fired a deep black coloration (see the last 3 photos). Consider that each rib has two sides, and how much surface area there is for this piece and the lid! Nancy says she can only polish three ribs in one sitting as they are so time-consuming. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Nancy Youngblood.”
“My slant swirl starts on the left and goes halfway around the pot. Half of the slant goes to the center part of the pot, and the other half goes to the other half of the pot. If you divide it up, this whole swirl will go halfway around the piece. I’d never seen anybody do a slant like that before. There’s a formula to doing it. It’s hard to explain how I do it, unless you see it. If you get distracted and you just move that line over just a little, it throws your whole design off. It can’t be even a fraction off.” Nancy Youngblood, Spoken Through Clay
