This is a tall water jar by Cavan Gonzales. He is a descendant of Maria Martinez, through her son Adam Martinez.  Cavan is one of the few potters today who continues to make traditional polychrome pottery.  This jar has a double shoulder and a fluted rim. Around the lower shoulder, there is a flower and cloud design.  Around the neck is an older-style butterfly pattern. The rim of the jar is fluted or undulating, which is always technically difficult to create.  There are four different colors of clay used to create the painted designs.  The jar has been traditionally fired and it is signed on the bottom, “Cavan Gonzales”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repairs.
