Frances Pino Torivio was known as one of the revivalist Acoma potters in the 1970s.  As one of the Matriarchs of the pueblo, she was influential in teaching other potters at that time. This is a classic water jar from the 1970s.  It is coil-built and painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay slip.  The bowl has a corrugated rim, which means the top coil was left exposed and indented.  Considering the shape of the indention, she may have just used her finger to create the corrugation.  The outside is painted with a rain, cloud, and mountain pattern.  This design is one that was popular at Acoma in the 1970s and early 1980s.   The bowl is signed, “Frances Torivio” on the bottom.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
