This an unusual collaborative piece by Grace Medicine Flower and her father, Camilio Tafoya. It is from the early 1970s and it was fired “black-and-red”. It is a distinctive firing technique where areas the piece (here, the top half) is covered before the manure is put on to turn it black. The bowl was made by Camilio and polished by Grace. She would then etch the designs into the clay before it was fired. This piece has two holes in the top, and an avanyu encircles it. The top is red, and the bottom is black. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower and Camilio Tafoya”. It is in excellent with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
