This is a striking large jar by Anderson Peynetsa. The jar has a high shoulder with a sloping neck. The neck of the jar has four classic Zuni rainbirds with swirling heads and thin lines. The body of the jar has large rosettes and sections with heartline deer. The jar is made with red Zuni clay and painted with black and red clay. The designs on this piece are all derived from historic Zuni pottery. Each deer is very tightly painted and they are stylized with thin legs. The heartline deer is a classic image in Zuni pottery, with the heart representing the strength and spirit of the animal. It is an elegant and striking vessel. The jar on the bottom, “A. Peynetsa”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Anderson Peynetsa is the son of Wilma Jean Peynetsa and the brother of Priscilla Peynetsa. He began making pottery in the eighth grade. His pottery involves gathering the clay and the natural pigments used to paint the designs on the pottery from the area around the Zuni Pueblo. Anderson is often aided by his wife, Aurelia, who polishes his pottery before he paints the designs.
