Tafoya, Margaret – Polychrome Jar with Birds (1940s)
$ 5,500.00
While Margaret Tafoya was famous for her large vessels and black fired pieces, in the 1930s to 1950s, she also created amazing polychrome pottery. She made fewer of these pieces and they have rarely survived over the ensuing century. However, they are among her most important and rarest pieces of pottery. This jar is from the 1940s and the rim and base are fully polished red. The central band is matte and there are four birds as the design. They are painted with black and white clay on a matte brown background. It is an interesting and very unusual design for her pottery. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Margaret Tafoya”. It is in very condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. This is definitely a historically important and exceptional jar by this important Santa Clara potter.
