6" long x 4"h

$ 500.00

Seferina Ortiz is the matriarch of a family of renowned potters, including Virgil Ortiz, Janice Ortiz, and Lisa Holt. This is a classic canteen that sits on its side. It is coil-built and painted with a white clay slip and wild spinach for the black.  The canteen is from the 1970s.  The piece is painted with rain clouds on the handles and around the rim.  The top/front has two lizards in relief and down the center is a corn plant.   The body of the canteen is painted with bee-weed (black) on a white clay slip.  This style of design is reminiscent of the work of her mother, Laurencita Herrara.  The canteen is signed on the bottom “Seferina Ortiz”.  It was traditionally fired and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
