Tapia, Tom – Bowl with Katsinas and Sun Medallion (1980s)

This is a classic bowl by Tom Tapia.  It is highly polished and designed in four sections.  There is a sunface medallion surrounded by an avanyu.  Next is a Hano Katsina spreading pollen and seeds on the corn with the sun in the sky. Note the jar the corn is growing out of with the etched bear!  Next is a Broadface Katsina.   Finally, another Hano Katsina with a Mimbres butterfly, tadpole, and fish. The bowl was fired black and then the reddish clay coloration is added after the firing.  It is this color combination for which Tom achieved recognition.  The bowl is signed, “Tom Tapia”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
