Gonzales, Rose – Red-on-Red Bowl with Rain and Cloud Designs (1943)

7"w x 3.5"h

$ 650.00

Rose Gonzales is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery.  However, she also made painted pottery during the course of her career.  This bowl is red-on-red.  The clients who owned it have a tag on, as they said their parent acquired it in 1943 and paid $2.00.  The coloration and style of the bowl seem to fit with that dating.  The bowl has a cloud and rain design.  The bowl was traditionally fired to a deep red coloration. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Rose”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.   Rose’s legacy can certainly be seen in the work of Tse-Pe, Dora Tse-Pe, and Russell Sanchez.
