Tapia, Tom – Carved Jar with Pottery and Sun Designs (1990s)

This is a classic jar by Tom Tapia. It is deeply carved with a mountain design. The bottom is fully polished. The top half is fully polished and etched away. There is a jar with an avanyu, two different types of Tewa sun, and a terraced bowl. The jar was fired black and the background area was then slipped with a reddish colored clay after the firing. It is this color combination for which Tom achieved recognition. The bowl is signed, “Tom Tapia”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
