Benn, Shirley Nampeyo – Jar with Bird Wings and Bird Tails (1990s)

7"w x 5"h

$ 800.00

This is a creative jar by Shirley Benn.  Shirley is a daughter of Daisy Hooee, a granddaughter of Annie Nampeyo Healing, and a great-granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano.  She learned to make pottery from her mother.  This is a larger piece of her pottery.  It is round with a short neck and fully polished. The jar has bird wings around the top of the shoulder that extend down to the bird tails. It is a stylized version of the classic migration pattern.  The bird wings are painted with thin lines!  The jar was painted with red clay and bee-weed (black).  The design is exceptional on this piece!  It was traditionally fired with light blushes on the surface.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Shirley Benn Nampeyo”.   Definitely a piece of history!
