Lucas, Steve -“Eagle Dancer Katsina” Four Color Jar (2026)

7.5"w x 5.5"h

$ 2,000.00

This is a new design by Steve Lucas.  He is one of the leading Hopi-Tewa potters working today.  Each piece is coil built, stone polished, painted with native clay slips and bee-weed (black) and traditionally fired. This is the first time he has made a piece with this design, using only the Eagle Katsinas.  There are two of the Eagle Katsinas on the jar, with the white faces.  They are depicted from the front and the back.  The back side has all the feathers show and the star for the bundle on the back of the dancers.  Separatgin  Separating them are sections with a diamond shaped star design polished red.  By depicting the front and back of the dancers, Steve has created a unique sense of motion to the jar.  The jar has polished white, red, and brown colorations.  The bottom of the jar is fully polished.  The jar was traditionally fired which created the blushes on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “S. Lucas” and a mudhead (koyemsi) and an ear of corn (corn clan).
