Nampeyo, Camille “Hisi” – Large Bowl with Hummingbird and Thunderbird (1990s)

6.75"w x 5.5"h

$ 1,500.00

Camille “Hisi” Quotskuyva learned to make pottery from her mother, Dextra Quotskuyva, a sister of noted painter Dan Namingha and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano, Annie Healing, and Rachel Nampeyo.  She is known for her use of traditional imagery and the delicate painting of her designs.  This is one of her larger pieces.  It is painted with four sections of design.  There is a thunderbird in two sections and old style hummingbirds in the other two sections.  They are separated by thin lines.  The birds are all accented with red polished areas.  Note all the detail in the thin lines!  The bowl was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface.  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Hisi Nampeyo” and a corn plant for Corn Clan. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
