Naha, Sylvia – Wide Jar with Sun Designs (1980s)
$ 1,200.00
Sylvia Naha created pieces with the white clay polished surface painted with bee-weed (black) and native clay slips. Throughout the 1980s, Sylvia was considered among the most innovative of the Hopi potters. Her pieces were classic in form and amazingly intricate in design. This is an early piece of her pottery, and it certainly draws inspiration from the work of her mother. The jar has sun and cloud designs painted onto the white surface. There are additional cloud designs below the suns and bird wings above. The jar is fully polished on the inside. The piece was traditionally fired, creating slight blushes on the surface. It is signed with a feather and an “S”. The piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
