Iris Nampeyo was a daughter of Fannie Nampeyo and was well known for her elegant asymmetrical vessels with corn as part of the design in relief.  This jar is from 1990 and I have to say I’ve never seen another one like it from her.  The jar is a combination of a variety of clay slips color. The neck is mauve and the bottom is red.  It’s the center that is so unusual. It is incised with rows of impressed designs to create a “corrugated” appearance.  There are 27 rows of design.  Take a closer look and they are very symmetric and alternate with rows of deer tracks and rows of rain.  It is a fascinating piece! This jar has fire-clouds from the firing, which is unusual in her pottery but adds depth to the coloration.  There is simplicity and elegance in her pottery. Iris’s pottery remains a classic among Hopi-Tewa pottery.  This jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Iris Nampeyo,” and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
