This is an intricately carved box by Chris Youngblood. The box is rectangular in shape. It is deeply carved with a male and female avanyu encircling the piece. They are deeply carved with swirls and sharp angles and fully polished. The ends of the box have carved mesa and rain designs. The lid of the box is carved with an avanyu on each side. One is male, the other female. Note as well how the lid is carved with the wave designs on the top of the lid! The Avanyu, or water serpent, is a design often seen in Santa Clara Pueblo pottery and is part of a story where the avanyu saves the village from a flood. The lid is as exceptional as the box, as it is flat and fully carved.

Both the lid and the box are perfectly fit with one another. They were traditionally fired to a glassy black. They are signed, “Chris Youngblood”.

They are deeply carved with swirls and sharp angles and fully polished. The rim of the box is slipped with mica and there is a ledge carved for the lid to sit. The lid of the box is carved with an avanyu on each side. One is male, the other female. They give the box it’s name, “From the Waves”. Note as well how the lid is carved with the wave designs on the top of the lid! Chris Youngblood is Margaret Tafoya's great-grandson and Nancy Youngblood's son. His mother, Nancy, taught him to make pottery. He won the "Best of Class - Youth Award" at Santa Fe Indian Market and the prestigious "Best of Pottery" in 2014. In the 2010 Native People's Magazine, he was featured as one of the "Generation Next Emerging Potters" and recently featured in Native Art Magazine in 2016 as one of the "Three Potters Under 30" to watch. In addition, his "Best of Pottery" jar was featured in the book "Spoken Through Clay."
Chris Youngblood says that he focuses on each piece, taking the time to work on the shape and stone polish the surface to a high shine, often polishing it several times to get it right. Chris comes to the clay focused on expanding his illustrious family's technical and artistic boundaries. His manipulation of the clay surface through his technically inspired imagery expands the art in new directions.
