Antonio, Frederica – 9″ Tall Five Color “Glowing Sunset” with Micro-Squares
$ 4,800.00
This is an exceptional large jar by Frederica Antonio. The jar has a classic olla shape with a high shoulder and sloping neck. It is coil-built from native clay and painted with bee-weed and clay slips. The jar is entitled, “Glowing Sunset”. She said the top and middle bands are the constantly changing color of the sunset in New Mexico. The painting process in the two colorful band on this piece is one that she rarely likes to do as it is so time-consuming. Each square is outlined with bee-weed, then filled in with a clay slip and THEN it is painted over again so that the lines are differentiated between each color. It is much more time-consuming but it is also much more visually dynamic. Each side is meant to look like falling leaves! The two black-and-white bands are painted with her micro squares. The middle band has a rain design and the bottom a checkerboard pattern. It is a striking combination of designs and coloration. This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is visually stunning! The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
