Frederica Antonio is renowned for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil-built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines, which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. This jar is one of the few with her “micro squares”. Take a closer look at the squares on the jar and you can see how they are even smaller than on her normal pieces. This takes more time but the result is more detailed and dramatic appearance. There are four sections of the jar representing the four directions. They are separated by a terraced cloud design in red and orange clay. It is a highly detailed and complex piece! The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head. The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
