Frederica Antonio is renowned for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil-built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. This jar has triangular mountain designs with some filled in with clay slips. The added color makes the “mountains in the mist”. They can best be seen from a distance. Separating the swirling bands are a section of clouds and one of wind. They are very complex patterns. It is a colorful and complex piece! The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head. The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
