Antonio, Frederica – “The Guardian” Double Lobe “Owl” Jar
$ 2,500.00
This is the first clay owl made by Frederica Antonio. She is renowned for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil-built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines, which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. In Acoma pottery, the owl is a symbol of protection and intuition and are usually depicted with large, insightful eyes. Over the years, numerous potters have created their own style of “owl” at Acoma. Hers is quite striking with a double lobe jar. The bottom has a checkerboard cloud design and the top a checkerboard pattern. The eyes are large and she has sculpted feathers on the top of the head. It is an exceptional combination of forms, design, and history. It is a colorful and complex piece! The base of the owl is flat and is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
