Mary Calengor is known for her highly detailed realism painted in oil on linen and canvas.  There is amazing detail in her art along with an intuitive sense of how she captures the light on her subjects.  This painting is entitled, “Red Dragon”.   We are pleased to have Mary’s paintings at both our Scottsdale and Santa Fe locations.

Mary says of this painting:

“I purchased this ginger jar for its unique and very colorful design.  I knew it would be so much fun to paint and that it would make a very noble statement especially if dramatically illuminated.  I was right on both counts.  The stark black background and shadow make the ginger jar almost pop off the canvas.  The dragon motif has been one of the most popular images in Chinese art. The red dragon is considered the “luckiest color” and was adopted as part of the Ming dynasty.  Dragons (usually with five claws on each foot) were a symbol of imperial power in many Chinese dynasties reserved only for the emperor.  Both the dragon and clouds.”
