Hubert Candelario is one of the few potters working at San Felipe Pueblo. This is one of his iconic “puzzle pots”. The piece is coil-built and then carved with a “puzzle” pattern that encircles the entire surface! The recessed carved area is slipped with a black mineral clay. The surface is micaceous, and Hubert says he may apply up to eight coats of micaceous slip over and over to get an even tonality to the surface. There is a modern feel to this unique design, with a very free-flowing motion across the surface of the large seedpot. This piece is from 199,6 and it is signed, “Hubert Candelario”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Hubert Candelario is one of the few active potters from San Felipe Pueblo. He began making pottery in 1990 using traditional micaceous clay. Hubert says he puts several coats of slip onto the surface so that the mica has an even "sparkle"! Hubert has won numerous awards for his pottery, and his work can be found in museums nationwide.
